How to Choose the Best Season for Travel in India
Because India spans diverse climatic zones ranging from equatorial tropical coasts to high-altitude Himalayan glaciers, the ideal season depends on where your journey takes you.
1. Winter (October to March) — Ideal for Most of India
Winter is the prime travel season across North India (Golden Triangle, Varanasi, Ayodhya), Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and South India (Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu). Temperatures range from a comfortable 15°C to 28°C during the day with cool, crisp evenings.
2. Summer (April to June) — Head to the Mountains
While the plains and desert regions experience high summer temperatures (38°C to 45°C), the Himalayan hill stations come alive. This is the optimal window to visit Srinagar, Gulmarg, Shimla, Manali, Rishikesh, and Ladakh.
3. Monsoon (July to September) — Lush Greenery & Lower Rates
The southwest monsoon drenches the subcontinent, reviving waterfalls (e.g. Dudhsagar in Goa) and blanketing the Western Ghats and Kerala in vibrant emerald greenery. Monsoon is ideal for Ayurvedic wellness rejuvenation in Kerala, though mountain trekking should be avoided due to landslide risks.
