Railway Transit Guide
How to Travel by Train in India: The IRCTC & Rail Handbook
Indian Railways connects over 7,000 stations across the subcontinent. Traveling by train is both the most atmospheric cultural adventure and often the most convenient intercity transit option. Here is how to navigate booking, classes, and stations smoothly.
1. Understanding Premier Train Types
- Vande Bharat Express: India's modern semi-high-speed daytime trains operating at up to 160 km/h. Feature aerodynamic snouts, automatic plug doors, comfortable rotating reclining seats, onboard Wi-Fi infotainment, large panoramic windows, and complimentary hot meals.
- Rajdhani & Shatabdi Express: Fully air-conditioned flagship trains connecting national and state capitals. Rajdhani operates overnight sleeper services; Shatabdi operates daytime intercity routes with meals included in the ticket.
- Gatimaan Express: Fast link connecting Hazrat Nizamuddin (Delhi) to Agra Cantt in just 100 minutes.
2. Choosing the Right Travel Class
| Class Code | Class Name | Best Suited For |
|---|---|---|
| EC / CC | Executive & AC Chair Car | Daytime express journeys (Vande Bharat, Shatabdi). Clean, seated, food served. |
| 1A | AC First Class | Maximum privacy; lockable 2-berth coupes or 4-berth cabins with bedding. |
| 2A | AC 2-Tier Sleeper | Curtained bunks with clean sheets, pillows, and blanket. Highly comfortable for couples & families. |
| 3A | AC 3-Tier Sleeper | Air-conditioned, reliable value option popular with domestic travelers. |
3. How to Book Train Tickets
All official bookings are processed through the government portal IRCTC (irctc.co.in) or registered travel booking applications. Foreign travelers can create an IRCTC account with an international mobile number and reserve tickets up to 120 days in advance, or utilize the Foreign Tourist Quota at major rail reservation counters (such as New Delhi Railway Station).
4. Station & Boarding Protocols
- Arrive at the railway station at least 30 to 45 minutes prior to departure.
- Check electronic display boards for your train number and assigned platform number.
- Locate your coach identifier (e.g. C1 for Chair Car, B2 for 3A, A1 for 2A) marked on digital indicators along the platform canopy.
- Always carry your government ID (Aadhaar or Passport) to present to the Ticket Examiner (TTE).
